“A strong individualist with glittering fingers… He has a pronounced musical profile which puts him in a class far above the cut and dried exponents of the international school of modern pianists.”
Harold C. Schonberg, The New York Times, from The Great Pianists – from Mozart to the Present

French-Cypriot pianist and composer Cyprien Katsaris was born in Marseille and began piano lessons at the age of four in Cameroon, where he spent his early childhood. A graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, he won the International Rostrum of Young Interpreters – UNESCO, the First Prize at the Cziffra International Competition, and was the only Western European prize-winner at the prestigious 1972 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium.

Mr. Katsaris has enjoyed an international career spanning performances with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Philharmonia Orchestra (London), NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo), Moscow Philharmonic, and Beijing Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with legendary conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Masur, Mstislav Rostropovich, Sir Simon Rattle, Antal Doráti, Charles Dutoit, Myung Whun Chung, Christoph von Dohnányi, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Sir Neville Marriner. In 1986, Karl Münchinger invited him personally to perform Haydn’s D major Concerto at his farewell concert with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra.

His extensive discography includes recordings for major labels such as Teldec (awarded the Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin, Warsaw 1985; and Grand Prix du Disque Franz Liszt, Budapest 1984 and 1989), Sony Classical, EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, BMG/RCA, Decca, Pavane, and his own label, PIANO 21. His celebrated Beethoven/Liszt 9th Symphony recording was named Germany’s Record of the Year in 1984.

Alongside core repertoire—such as the complete Mozart concertos recorded live in Salzburg and Vienna—Katsaris is noted for reviving neglected works, including the Liszt/Tchaikovsky Concerto in the Hungarian Style, recorded with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

A passionate advocate of musical heritage and outreach, he has appeared in numerous significant events. In 1992, Japan’s NHK TV produced a 13-part series on Frédéric Chopin featuring Katsaris. In 1999, he received a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall for a recital marking the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. On Mozart’s 250th birthday in 2006, he was the soloist at the inaugural concert of the Mozart Orchestra Mannheim. That same year, he became the first pianist since Franz Liszt to give masterclasses in Liszt’s Weimar home. In 2008, he performed two concerts at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts during the Olympic Games. In 2014, he inaugurated the concert series at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Katsaris has served on the juries of many prestigious international competitions, including the Chopin Competition (Warsaw), Liszt (Budapest & Utrecht), Beethoven (Bonn), Marguerite Long–Jacques Thibaud (Paris), Scriabin (Moscow), and others. From 1977 to 2007, he was Artistic Director of the Echternach International Festival in Luxembourg.

He has received numerous honors:
UNESCO Artist for Peace (1997)
Commandeur de l’Ordre de Mérite (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, 2009)

Médaille Vermeil de la Ville de Paris (2001)
